Was motiviert mich? Wie motiviere ich mich selbst?

Are anti.tech teachers in denial?

Penny UR (SEETA Website, September 2009)

I’m in sympathy with what you’re saying here: not that I think (nor do you!) that there is no use for technology: but rather, I’ve no patience with the idea that you ‘should’ be using it. The fact that IT has made spectacular progress in the last few years, and that many of us simply cannot imagine functioning without our cellphones, laptops, Ipods, whatever … does not mean that it has to be an essential component of language teaching courses. It’s like, the attitude is… ‘here’s a solution (IT): let’s look for a problem it can solve’. Instead of ‘What problems do I have in language teaching? Can IT solve any of them?’.

Racking my brains to think of places I’ve found computer technology useful. I suppose I’ve found it good to use ‘track changes’ in Word to give my students’ feedback on their written work, submitted electronically; I’ve found it helpful to discuss their work with them sometimes through email; and it’s much simpler to give grades online. Occasional Internet tasks can add variety. But the day-to-day procedures of language teaching – I believe, with you, that they are most effective when based on old-fashioned paper, pencils, board, markers/chalk. The much maligned ‘chalk and talk’ convention has a lot going for it.

Incidentally, I did a rough survey on computer-assisted language learning with a class of fairly high-level experienced (school) teachers recently (in Israel, whose population is, on the whole, pretty computer-literate). Nearly all of them said they never, or very rarely, used CALL. And, significantly, several of them had tried it in the past, but given up because it was more trouble than it was worth: relative to the amount of learning achieved there was too much time wasted on technical glitches, preparation, monitoring results.

What is anyone else’s experience with this?

Es geht los.....

Aktuelles Stadtwappen der Stadt Duisburg

Kurzentschlossen angemeldet. Flug am Mittwoch gebucht. Hotel erst tags zuvor.
